John Baptist was promised by God to send,
Ahead of Jesus, to prepare the way;
John came, asking Israel their sins to end,
“Repent, O Israel; be baptized today!
A great stir ensued; many went to hear;
The Pharisees asked John, “Are you the One?”
“No,” replied John, “but He is standing near;”
And He was—among them then stood the Son!
Jesus came down, asking to be baptized;
“Not You, Lord; I’m not fit to tie your shoe!”
“Let it be now, that all be realized,
As a sign, of what the righteous should do!”
And the Savior under the Jordan slipped,
Teaching believers, they, too, ought be dipped!
