A rusty nail driven deep into wood,
Pierced each hand and foot, where such ought
not be;
What fiend is this, that humanity could
Hang Him thus, inflicting such agony?
Why, He’s no fiend, but their own Savior dear,
Come to redeem them from death and the grave;
The only reason Jesus came down here
To a condemned world was lost souls to save!
This is His thanks, for offering to men
A new life, when they’d thrown the first away?
To receive pardon for their guilt of sin,
Only to believe Christ was slain that day?
It was cruel, no doubt, to slay Christ, the Son,
But divine justice required it be done!
